Organ Harvesting from Living Falun Gong Practitioners Revealed

Labor camps in China are reported to have been actively harvesting and selling the organs of Falun Gong practitioners since 2001 with the help of hospitals affiliated with Public Security Bureau and Armed Police.

During the apparent peak of the organ harvesting between 2001 and 2003, the major camps that detained Falun Gong practitioners became overcrowded, with the number of detainees maintained at a level of 5,000-20,000 in each. Due to overcrowding in the labor camps, many Falun Gong practitioners were transferred to other facilities, including mental institutions and hospitals. The Liaoning Thrombus Treatment Center of Integrated Chinese and Western Medicine in the Sujiatun District of Shenyang City in Liaoning Province (the Sujiatun Hospital) and its underground structures was one such facility (referred as the Sujiatun Concentration Camp).

Wang Bin, a 44-year old Falun Gong practitioner from Heilongjiang Province was mercilessly beaten to death by policemen Feng Xi and others at Daqing Men's Labor Camp on September 24, 2000. Afterwards, his heart and brain were removed, and the remains were placed in the morgue of Daqing People's Hospital. (

A Chinese journalist and the former wife of one of the surgeons involved in harvesting corneas at the Sujiatun Hospital recently revealed to the media that live organ removal operations were performed at the hospital. The surgeons knew all the victims were Falun Gong practitioners but were told that killing the practitioners was helping the Chinese Communist Party to do “cleansing.” The doctors would not have to bear any consequences due to the central government’s policy that “no one would be held accountable for killing Falun Gong practitioners.” Falun Gong practitioners were kept at this facility, given blood tests, and killed as the need for specific organs arose.

A military doctor reported that the Sujiatun Hospital was only one of 36 such facilities in China used for organ harvesting. Currently most Falun Gong practitioners are still being held in jails, labor camps and detention centers. A detailed list of labor camps is available upon request. Only when there is a need for organs for transplant are practitioners transferred on a large scale to the special facilities. Currently, the major areas where Falun Gong practitioners are detained are the northeastern provinces:  Heilongjiang, Jilin and Liaoning. The largest camp, codenamed “672-S,” is said to hold over 120,000 people, including Falun Gong practitioners and other prisoners of conscience.

The FAQ section of the website for the China International Transplantation Network Assistance Center (CITNAC) based in Shenyang City, the same city where the Sujiatun Hospital is located, states:  “It may take only one week to find out the suitable donor, the maximum time being one month because the kidney transplant needs to find a HLA tissue match...Our organs do not come from brain death victims because the state of the organ may not be good.”  The median wait time for a matching kidney in the U.S. is a full two years.  Since the survival time for a kidney to be transplanted is only about 24 to 48 hours, medical professionals believe that only the existence of a huge, readily accessible organ bank can explain their ability to promise such a short waiting time for a kidney transplant.  In addition, the site proudly states, “There are more than 35,000 kidney transplant operations that have been done in public hospitals in 29 cities, provinces and municipalities in China, and the number of kidney transplant operations is at least 5,000 every year all over the country. So many transplantation operations are owing to the support of the Chinese government. The Supreme Demotic Court, Supreme Demotic Law-officer, Police, Judiciary, Department of Health and Civil Administration have enacted a law together to make sure that organ donations are supported by the government, This is unique in the world.”

Cover Up

After the Sujiatun Concentration Camp was exposed on March 9 2006, the Falun Gong practitioners held there were transferred, and all evidence was removed. In addition, many plainclothes agents began posing as local residents and taxi drivers in the Sujiatun area to give false information to investigators and journalists as part of what appears to be a skillful cover up.

On March 28, 2006, China’s Ministry of Health announced the  “Interim Regulation for Human Organ Transplant Practice”, which would in theory outlaw forced organ removal. The legislation will not go into effect until July 1—giving profit-bent officials a three-month window for wanton seizure of organs. In the past, China took no such measures, even after testimony before the United States Congress detailing China’s secret organ trade in 2001.

After destroying all the evidence at the Sujiatun facility, the Chinese communist authorities denied the existence of the Sujiatun concentration camp on April 11, 2006,

Also, after being widely cited by Falun Gong practitioners as proof of live organ harvesting, the English website for the China International Transplantation Network Assistance Center (CITNAC) was also taken down around April 24, 2006.

Flurry of Organ Harvesting from Living People

The World Organization to Investigate the Persecution of Falun Gong (WOIPFG)’s report released on April 17, 2006, indicated that in at least eight Chinese provinces, doctors are working overtime to perform a flurry of surgeries, excising detainees’ organs, so as to “cash in” on the bodies of the currently-held Falun Gong prisoners of conscience. Post operation, the victims are killed and their bodies cremated.

The overall picture is clear: the camps are exposed, the Chinese Communist officials panic, discuss what to do (for three weeks), then a massive cover-up effort is launched, including blanket denials and cosmetic legislation. Before the legislation takes effect a flurry of operations turning human lives into profit begins.

When a person donates an organ willingly, it is a noble gesture that can save another life. But when men and women have their bodies cut open and their organs raided without consent while they are still alive, one is hard pressed to imagine a grosser violation of human dignity. The fact that it is the state, the “people’s representative,” that ultimately profits from the sale of these body parts only adds insult to injury. If this were done to one individual, it would be considered murder involving unusual cruelty. The fact that it is done on thousands of innocent Chinese citizens every year can only be considered an abomination and a damning indictment of the current Chinese regime.

It is now clear we have all seriously underestimated the scope and severity of the persecution of Falun Gong, and chances are we have just seen the tip of the iceberg. There are implications for America and the rest of the world, too, because this is China - a huge economy, a nation that still carries a Communist mandate while actively building up its military, an entity that is skillful at the cover-up. It cannot hurt to find out what the Chinese regime is really doing in its own backyard. Gathering witness testimony can only help give us a better sense of what kind of beast we are dealing with and could very well prove to be a wise decision.

Led by the Falun Dafa Association and MingHui website researchers, the Coalition to Investigate the Persecution of Falun Gong in China (CIPFG) was formed on April 17, 2006. This coalition includes media, non-profit organizations, and legal professionals that have expertise in uncovering details of human rights abuses in China. CIPFG plans to conduct a “broad and rigorous” investigation of China’s concentration and labor camps, and also medical facilities throughout China that conduct organ transplants in light of mounting evidence that thousands of Falun Gong practitioners are being killed for their organs there.
