Frequently Asked Questions about Sujiatun Concentration Camp

In the following FAQ, we offer explanations to address some concerns among government officials, journalists, and others about the live organ harvesting in Sujiatun Concentration Camp.  The investigation through the disclosure of witnesses or through other channels is still on-going, due to the tight information control which is particularly true in this kind of state-run crimes, many details are still being looked into and subject to further verification.  We hope all kind-hearted people will pay serious attention to this crime, participate in the investigation, and call for an end to persecution of Falun Gong. Please bear in mind that a bigger picture is the Chinese Communist Party’s nationwide policy to eliminate Falun Gong practitioners over the past six-plus years. The organ removal is not a normal medical operation, but part of genocidal means to eliminate Falun Gong practitioners.
Q1: Is there a facility in Sujiatun with such a large space so as to hold some 6,000 Falun Gong practitioners?
A:  According to informants, in 2001 about 6,000 Falun Gong practitioners were detained in the Sujiatun District, Shenyang City, Liaoning Province.

Hospital staff members have reported that the Sujiatun hospital has a large underground facility. Few employees at the Sujiatun hospital have permission to enter the underground structure. Hospital staff suggested that Falun Gong practitioners were detained in this underground facility. Now the Sujiatun story has been exposed by the press, the Government may have moved these people elsewhere.

The estimate that there were some 6,000 Falun Gong practitioners held at the hospital came from a hospital staff member who was in charge of logistics, supplies and procurement. This staff member had determined that the purchase of basic supply materials (food, etc.) had suddenly increased in 2001. The amount of supply purchase was far beyond what would have been required to meet the needs of the officially registered patients at the hospital during that time. This additional supply could support some 6,000 people. The actual number is however unknown and could be higher or lower. Some practitioners have been allegedly transferred to other hospitals for harvesting of their organs for transplant at these other locations.

Detained Falun Gong practitioners are reportedly numbered, just as the Jews were numbered in the concentration camps of Nazi Germany.

Q2: Live organ removal can only be done with advanced facilities and complicated techniques, which seems not existent in the Liaoning Provincial Thrombosis Hospital of Integrated Chinese and Western Medicine mentioned by the witness.
A: Normal live organ removal would have to ensure the safety of the donor’s life. To that end, advanced facilities and equipment are needed. In the case of Falun Gong practitioners, the death camp and organ factory is made possible by the national policy of “eliminating Falun Gong physically.” The operations are performed with no regard or respect to the donor’s life, therefore no advanced equipment or technique is necessary. That is why this is actually part of the policy-driven genocide.
According to a witness, the process of the organ harvesting is to first inject a dose of medicine that will result in the victim’s heart failure (this will also serve to disable the victim’s mobility during the operation). After the removal of the organs, some of the victims will die and some are near death. Regardless of their condition, they will be sent to the crematorium.
Quite a few hospitals in Shenyang indicate that they have live kidney sources. A few hospitals have confirmed that they use organs from Falun Gong practitioners. Please refer to details in the reports of WOIPFG. ( Investigative Report of Human Organ Harvesting from Living Abducted Falun Gong Practitioners at the Sujiatun Concentration Camp (Part II), March 30, 2006

Q3: Liaoning Provincial Thrombosis Hospital of Integrated Chinese and Western Medicine has 460 staff members. By common sense, a hospital of such scale cannot have more than 20 surgeons that could possibly perform organ removal surgery. Is it feasible to have 4500 organ removal surgeries performed within three years?
A: The key to understand this is again the persecution policy against Falun Gong. Medical doctors were told it was not a crime, but “cleansing” for the Chinese Communist Party. Therefore, it is not necessary to have experienced or skilled doctors perform the organ removal. In 2004, Guangdong Satellite TV station reported a case of a Hong Kong family seeking organ transplantation in Guangzhou. The organ transplantation operation was performed by a plastic surgeon in a village hospital. The family found this out because the patient died shortly after the operation. We can imagine that surgeons without adequate experience or even medical school students are performing the operations.
There are several hospitals near the Sujiatun camp: The Shenyang No.6 People’s Hospital, the Hospital Affiliated with the Liaoning Chinese Medicine Hospital, and the Shenyang Hospital of Infectious Disease. It is quite possible that doctors in nearby hospitals are performing organ removal surgeries in Liaoning Provincial Thrombosis Hospital of Integrated Chinese and Western Medicine as it is such a lucrative business.
The ex-wife says that her ex-husband sometimes performed 3 live organ removal operations per day when he was involved. Organ removal or live organ removal had been done by neighborhood hospitals as well. She estimates that 4,000 were killed in 3 years. The witness says that she often saw unknown doctors in the hospital who were affiliated with other hospitals.

Q4: According to the witness, the removed organs are exported to Thailand. But Thailand forbids the importation of organs from foreign countries.
A: There is a sharp difference between smuggling organs and normal lawful trade. Smuggling organs would be like smuggling illegal drug, which may be illegal in Thailand or elsewhere, but it occurs as long as there is a profit to be made, according to informants. China admits that it performs organ transplant for many patients from the Southeast Asia. Many foreign patients have had organ transplant operations in Shenyang. Recently, the officials in Japan and Malaysia have expressed concerns over the deaths of their citizens after receiving organ transplantation in China - this occurs because organ transplantation in China may not have strictly followed medical standards and procedures.
Q5:  Are there actually so many Falun Gong practitioners?

A:  According to Falun Gong Minghui web site, from July 20, 1999 to July 2001, about 7 million Falun Gong practitioners went to Beijing to appeal. In the months around July 2001, many Falun Gong practitioners gathered in Beijing urban areas. 300,000 is estimated to be the peak number of practitioners staying in Beijing; if those staying in Beijing's suburbs is considered, the number rises to around 700,000. A 1998 Shanghai TV program reported before the persecution that 100 million Chinese were practicing Falun Gong.

In order to avoid their family/friends being persecuted because of them, the detained Falun Gong practitioners refused to submit their names and regions. The witnesses say that people detained there are called by numbers, not names.

Q6:  How do you know those detained in the Sujiatun Hospital were all Falun Gong practitioners?

A:  Through investigation, the first witness to come forward, the TV journalist known as "Mr. R.," realized that all the victims are Falun Gong practitioners. The ex-wife of a surgeon said that every surgeon involved in the live organ removal scheme knew that the victims were Falun Gong practitioners. When the doctor asked if it would be murder since these people were alive, leaders in the Department of Health said no one would be accountable for the death of Falun Gong practitioners. This is helping to "cleanse" the nation. Detained Falun Gong practitioners are unidentified.

Q7:  Why did crimes beginning in 2001 not be revealed until 2006?

A:  This is a crime sponsored by the State. Witnesses indicate that participants in this scheme are health care professionals, correction officers, armed police, labor camp personnel and organ brokers, and the number is large. Even the doctors were carefully chosen. Usually they were orphans of communist army soldiers or people who have close ties with those in the scheme. Even the doctors who once participated in this scheme now face the danger of being killed for the sake of destroying evidence.

The surgeon who is the ex-husband of the staff member who came forward as a witness didn't want to continue his involvement. When he made this decision, he began to receive life-threatening phone calls. Once, he survived an assassination attempt. A few doctors disappeared without a trace. All participants are afraid of being killed. A few surgeons left China after having plastic surgery done.

In China, it is impossible to report such news. Even when an insider has decided to quit news outlets outside China may be reluctant to publish. Mr. R has met with several big mainstream media outlets in Japan. The reporters understood and believed his story was true, but they said that this article would not be published because of the relationship between Japan and China.
